Rare 1950s Gerald Thurston for Lightolier Glass and Brass Sunburst Ceiling Light

This rare and super dramatic light was designed by Gerald Thurston for Lightolier and still retains the original label as well as an etched number. In amazing condition, with no chips or damage to the glass, Lightolier devised a wonderful technique for creating the colored rays on the glass flange, by melting small glass pebbles in the colored sections, they were able to retain the luminescent effect rather than opacity. These Sunburst rays in harvest colors of green, rust and gold add joyfulness to the fixture. The brass ceiling mount is also lovely and sculptural, and also in great condition except for a small amount of paint at the rim where it meets the ceiling. The fixture uses three regular base light bulbs, offering a great amount of light, while the frosted white dome diffuses the light beautifully, causing the colored rays to really glow and stand out. The only tiny flaw is a small dent in one side of the brass circle that supports the glass to the fixture – barely noticeable – see the photos. The brass has a lovely patina but is easily polished if one prefers the look. Rare in the limited offerings for vintage ceiling mount fixtures, this beauty will tie into any vintage, Mid-Century Modern or Modernist decor. Please note that LED or fluorescent bulbs are preferred, since they sit close to the glass, rather than incandescent bulbs. If incandescent bulbs are used, I would recommend no greater than 40 watts, whereas any wattage is fine if LED or fluorescent since they stay cool when lit.

Dimensions: 20″ diameter x 8″ high.
